Most Russians back Moscow's plans to deploy Iskander missiles

Some 65% of Russians said they backed Moscow's plans to place short-range missiles in Russia's Kaliningrad Region, but were worried that the ties with the West would worsen following the move, an opinion poll said.

The Levada Center's November survey said only 19% of the respondents said they did not support the plans, while 16% refused to answer.

With the many times that Russia has been invaded from every direction possible and with the hate rhetoric coming out of Eastern Europe and the Baltics....Russians are very smart to be ready for any contingencies....It is a pity that the west under the Bush Administration and the EU who doesn't seem to have the guts to stand up to those whiney Eastern European hater countries has to start a new cold war...but Russia cannot afford to trust the west which has betrayed it before....those missiles are necessary....

Most certainly. With Polish missiles menacing the Russian Federation it is only prudent to respond. If the Poles aggression is not countered it only encourages more anti-Russian hostility.

Wow this sounds like Hitler talk. Hitler invaded Poland with the excuse that Poland "was being aggressive against Nazi Germany". The only "aggression" Poland had against Nazi Germany was that it spoke out against Nazi Germany as Nazi Germany was constantly slandering and threatening Poland. Nazi Germany having a supremacist mentality took all criticisms of its slanderous Nazi attacks on others, as being "aggression against Nazi Germany" etc.

Same thing here. A Russia-First cool aid drinker like you is talking about the "Poles aggression" and there is NOT ONE missile on Polish soil and there most likely will not be.

But its so fun for supremacist countries and there lackeys like you to talk about "aggression against them" to justify their real aggression including all of the aggressive actions they committed against their neighboring nations.

Its just utterly amazing how the biggest nation in the world which is armed to the teeth with Nukes is playing this victim card (including its supporters) about how all of these tiny nations near it are being "aggressive" against the poor poor One Thousand pound Gorilla nation on steroids with Nukes. Amazing.

No thanks to the Putin controlled Russian media!

That's what it says and of course the Russia-First people echo it since they are incapable of ever criticizing what the Putin media says.

I am not defending Russia, nor speaking for Russia First, but expressing my views as an European.

If Poland hadn't stupidely believed all these fairy tales about Iran threatening them, the missile question would never have occured and Europe would have a much more peaceful future to contemplate rather than becoming an arsenal.

It's by giving way to unfounded paranoia that Poland was instrumental in restarting the arms race.

I would be really curious to know how far Iran is really close to possessing a long range missile capable of hitting Poland.
And also, why Poland of all countries? That is the $64,000 question!

Evidently you are not that good at reading in between the lines.

Do you think it was an accident that the Polish government dragged its feet with the "missile deal" with the US for EIGHTEEN MONTHS? Frankly, it appears most Poles do not want it, that's why there was this long delay. They only "agreed" to it when the Russian invasion of Georgian reminded them of what Russia did to them.

And the reason for the agreement with the US is because the US finally gave in to Polish demands for an ADDITIONAL patriot missile system that would not be for Iran but for RUSSIAN bombers & planes similar to the ones used in Georgia.

Because of the constant stupid cocky warlike tough guy bravado talk and ACTIONS of Russia, the Russian invasion of Georgia made the reluctant Poles all of a sudden desperate to have US forces, equipment, etc. on Polish soil FOR ANY REASON as a hedge against a Russian invasion.

So the answer to your question is NO the Poles probably don't believe the whole Iran thing and feel much more threatened by Russia, especially given the history of Russia with Poland and its cocky attitude of how all the "mere mortal" nations like Poland should keep kissing ass to Russia (like in Soviet times) because it sees it self as some type of God like country that's better and superior to everyone since it is the largest nation in the world armed to the teeth with nukes.

Maybe you should explain to me how missiles installed to counter an hypothetical Iranian threat will also protect Poland against Russia.

Beside, I fail to see how the recent conflict in South Ossetia in any way affect Poland. This was a very localised incident.

But you haven't told us yet why, among all the European countries, Poland is the only one which felt threatened by Iran. This concern started well before the Ossetian episode.
